Have Questions About Giving Through a Donor-Advised Fund?

What is a donor-advised fund?
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a charitable giving account established with a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation or financial institution.
When you contribute cash, securities, or other eligible assets to your DAF, you may qualify for a charitable tax deduction in that year. The assets may then be invested for potential tax-free growth while you decide when and where to recommend grants.
You can use one DAF to support Play Like a Girl and other eligible nonprofit organizations that matter to you.

How does a donor-advised fund work?
A donor-advised fund makes charitable giving simple:

  1. You contribute cash, securities, or other eligible assets to your DAF.
  2. Your DAF sponsor manages the account, investments, administration, and recordkeeping.
  3. You recommend grants to eligible nonprofit organizations, including Play Like a Girl, on a schedule that supports your charitable goals.

Although you recommend how the funds are granted, your DAF sponsor retains legal control of the assets and must approve each grant recommendation.

What are the main advantages of a donor-advised fund?
A DAF can help you:

  • Contribute cash, appreciated securities, and other eligible assets to one charitable account.
  • Centralize your charitable giving, administration, receipts, and recordkeeping.
  • Separate the timing of a potential charitable tax deduction from the timing of your grants.
  • Potentially reduce or eliminate capital-gains taxes by contributing eligible appreciated assets directly to your DAF sponsor.
  • Invest charitable assets for potential tax-free growth.
  • Recommend grants to multiple eligible nonprofit organizations from one account.
  • Schedule one-time or recurring grants when offered by your DAF sponsor.
  • Respond quickly when urgent community needs arise.
  • Involve your children or other family members in your charitable decisions.
  • Create a lasting philanthropic legacy by naming successors or charitable beneficiaries, when permitted by your DAF sponsor.

Tax treatment varies based on the assets contributed and each donor’s individual circumstances. Please consult your financial or tax advisor for personalized guidance.

How do I establish a donor-advised fund?
You can establish a DAF through a community foundation, financial institution, or national donor-advised fund sponsor. Contact your financial advisor, community foundation, or preferred DAF provider to discuss its contribution requirements, fees, investment options, grantmaking policies, and legacy-planning features.

How do I recommend a grant to Play Like a Girl?
Use the DAFpay button above to recommend a grant directly from your donor-advised fund. You may also contact your fund sponsor or financial institution and request a grant using the following information:

Can I make a monthly, quarterly, or annual grant to Play Like a Girl?
Many DAF sponsors allow donors to schedule recurring grant recommendations. Availability, frequency, and minimum grant amounts vary by provider. Contact your DAF sponsor or select the monthly-grant option in your account, if available, to provide dependable, year-round support for Play Like a Girl programs.

Will I receive a tax deduction when my DAF sends a grant to Play Like a Girl?
You may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction when you contribute assets to the organization sponsoring your DAF. You generally cannot claim an additional deduction when your DAF sponsor later sends a grant to Play Like a Girl.

Play Like a Girl will acknowledge your generosity, but that acknowledgment should not be treated as a separate charitable tax receipt. Please consult your DAF sponsor, financial advisor, or tax advisor with questions about your individual circumstances.
