OUR INAUGURAL STEM+ SPORTS HACKATHON

This July, we’re inviting you—8th and 9th grade girls from our partnership community in the Bay Area—to come together for a day of inspiration and innovation. This hackathon for social change is an opportunity for you to connect with other girls with big dreams to create innovative solutions to the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with a special emphasis on sports.

You’ll also get to learn from leading women in STEM and sports, Play Like a Girl team members and partners including SheIS and the San Francisco 49ers EDU on how they’ve rallied their communities around the STEM crisis and how our collective work is impacting the future of girls in STEM and sports. You’ll have a chance to compete for some amazing prizes. You’ll also make a lot of new friends.

Lyda Hill Philanthropies’ commitment to women in STEM surpasses $60 million with its recent $25 million investment in the new IF/THEN Initiative. A first-of-its-kind coalition uniting preeminent science institutions with some of the most recognizable names and brands in popular culture, IF/THEN seeks to inspire girls to consider STEM careers.

Rooted in a firm belief that there is no better time to highlight positive and successful female professional role models, IF/THEN is designed to activate a culture shift among young girls to open their eyes to STEM by:

Funding and elevating women in STEM as role models.

Convening cross-sector partners in entertainment, fashion, sports, business and academia to illuminate the importance of STEM everywhere.

Inspiring girls with better portrayals of women in STEM through media and learning experiences to pique their interest in STEM careers.

Play Like a Girl is funded by our partner SheIS, a member of the IF/THEN Coalition, to produce two sports hackathons aimed at creating new innovations to help advance STEM in sports for girls and women.
