Program Facilitator & Storyteller

About Play Like a Girl

Play Like a Girl is a national nonprofit dedicated to leveling the playing field for girls in sports and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). For over 20 years, we’ve helped girls build confidence, leadership, and skills for competitive careers in male-dominated fields through mentorship, teamwork, and education. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, we operate remotely with a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing team committed to expanding opportunities for girls and young women nationwide.

The Opportunity

Using our ready-to-use curriculum, you’ll lead group activities, support mentoring conversations, and help middle school girls set goals and recognize their progress. You’ll also capture approved photos, video clips, and stories for our communications.

This role is especially well suited to college juniors and seniors interested in education, youth development, communications, sports, STEM, social work, psychology, or nonprofit leadership. All majors are welcome. Campus leadership, athletics, volunteering, caregiving, and paid work count as relevant experience.

Schedule and Location

• Program: Twelve one-hour school sessions, with six in the fall and six in the spring.
• Hours: Approximately 5–7 paid hours per active program week at one site, including preparation, travel, setup, facilitation, documentation, storytelling, and approved outreach.
• Availability: Assigned weekday sessions within the noon–6 p.m. local-time window, plus a required virtual team meeting every Monday, 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Central Time.
• Location: Live within 30 miles of your selected city and have reliable transportation to your assigned site. Approved planning, writing, and team collaboration may be completed remotely.

Your assignment and schedule will be confirmed before you accept an offer. Additional school assignments and hours will be discussed separately.

What You’ll Do

• Lead welcoming, interactive sessions. Prepare activities, explain instructions clearly, keep groups engaged, and make room for different personalities and participation styles.
• Support mentoring and learning. Brief mentors, guide balanced conversations, and help girls explore interests, practice skills, and track goals.
• Keep programs organized. Coordinate with school contacts, support reminders and forms, and maintain attendance and session records.
• Capture and tell meaningful stories. With verified permission and appropriate supervision coverage, collect photos, clips, voluntary quotes, and observations. Organize materials and develop stories for blogs, email, social media, and video, following organizational approval procedures.
• Build local connections. Share approved opportunities with relevant community networks.
• Learn and communicate. Participate in training and coaching, apply feedback, and promptly raise concerns or support needs.

What You’ll Bring

• Experience leading, coaching, teaching, mentoring, or caring for a group.
• Warmth, positive energy, clear communication, and sound judgment.
• The ability to adjust an activity, include quieter participants, and set kind, consistent boundaries.
• Reliable attendance, preparation, organization, and follow-through.
• Clear writing and basic photo or video skills.
• Willingness to complete required background screening and youth-safety training before working with participants.

Camp counseling, orientation leadership, resident advising, tutoring, cheerleading, coaching, and student organizations are all relevant. Experience with middle school students, Canva, CapCut, or campus communications is helpful but not required. You don’t need a STEM degree or professional equipment.

Team and Support

You’ll report to the Program Coordinator and work with school partners, mentors, volunteers, and fellow facilitators. You’ll receive curriculum, materials, training, regular coaching, and support with program challenges.

Success Measures

We’ll evaluate your success through:

• Session readiness: Prepared materials, clear instructions, and smooth transitions.
• Inclusive engagement: Activities that welcome different participation styles and help girls feel included.
• Mentor preparation: Mentors who understand their roles and contribute to productive group conversations.
• Timely documentation: Accurate attendance and session notes submitted within 24 hours.
• Responsible storytelling: Organized, permission-checked content submitted within 48 hours when consent and safe coverage allow, plus accurate story drafts completed by agreed deadlines.
• Communication and follow-through: Prompt reporting of concerns and completion of assigned program and outreach tasks.
• Growth: Observable improvement through coaching and participant feedback.

Pay and Perks

You’ll earn $25 per hour for all authorized work, including training, preparation, meetings, program delivery, documentation, storytelling, and outreach.

You’ll gain practical leadership and communications experience, regular coaching, connections with educators and professionals, and opportunities to build an approved portfolio of your work.

How to Apply and What Happens Next

1. Complete Stage One. After applying, you’ll receive an email with full instructions: a scenario for a welcome video of up to 90 seconds and a fictional participant story to turn into a 250–350-word blog post and a social caption of up to 75 words.
2. Email your submissions. Send them to [email protected] with the subject Stage One Submission | Program Facilitator | [Your Full Name]. Attach your work or provide viewable links.
3. Attend a virtual interview. Selected applicants will be invited to a 20-minute conversation about their experience, availability, and approach to working with girls.
4. Demonstrate your facilitation skills. Finalists will complete a virtual simulation using a Play Like a Girl activity shared in advance.

Hiring Timeline

• Applications: Priority consideration by September 18, 2026; final deadline September 21.
• Interviews and finalist activities: Scheduled virtually on a rolling basis.
• Offers: Extended by September 25.
• Virtual onboarding: September 28–October 1, with screening and pre-work completed by October 2.
• In-person training and parent orientation: An assigned date in your city between October 5 and October 12, confirmed before you accept an offer.
• Program start: October 13 or later, according to your school’s schedule.
