Play Like a Girl will debut its Meet + Mentor day camp in Katy, Texas (just 40 minutes outside of Houston) on Friday, August 27, 2021, in partnership with Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Specially designed for middle school girls (ages 10-14) in the Houston/Katy area, this day camp is 100% free of charge and provides the opportunity for students to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in sports and the outdoors. The Academy Sports + Outdoors headquarters will be transformed into a mentoring lab designed to encourage local girls in their STEM pursuits and create a diverse female STEM leadership pipeline.

Play Like a Girl staff, Academy employees and volunteers will accompany 25 Houston/Katy students through STEM-related and confidence-building activities centered around the launch of a new apparel collection. Campers will see and touch multiple steps in the process including:

• Learn about the process from A to Z of launching a new brand within retail. From researching market gaps and creating CAD models for prototypes and fit to marketing and distributing the final product, this camp experience will be laden in STEM+ inspiration.
• Explore different mood boards, prototypes, and fabric choices.
• Watch a photoshoot in action

Play Like a Girl Meet + Mentor events are ongoing celebrations to shine a light on empowering women role models in an effort to inspire more girls to reach their full potential in sport and STEM.

Participating students will receive a free shirt, $50 Academy gift card and be featured in a three-part YouTube series showcased across Academy’s social channels this summer.

This event is the final of three Meet + Mentor day camps held across the south this summer.
